Tucson, Ariz. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost to the No. 11 ranked and host Arizona Wildcats in their first match of the Arizona Wildcat Classic being held Sept. 6-7in Tucson. The Lobos lost in three games 30-23, 30-14, and 30-22 to fall to 0-5 on the season. UNM will play No. 14 ranked Pepperdine in their final match of the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

Leading the Lobos statistically was senior Staci Masten who scored a team-high seven kills and hit .357 on the night (7k-2e-14ta). Masten added three block assists. Sophomore Monica Meihack scored nine digs and totaled 21 assists on the evening. Meihack scored the Lobos lone service ace.

Sophomore Cayse Kaveny hit .455 for the match on six kills, one error in 11 attempts.

Numbers wise UNM hit .111 on 25kills, 15 errors in 90 attempts to UA’s .361 (56k-17e-108ta). The Wildcats defensively had 40 digs to the Lobos 27. Arizona outblocked New Mexico 5.0 to 3.0.

“I’m very proud of this team,” said head coach Kelley Sliva. “They never stopped playing hard the entire match. We had some passing trouble but we went into this match with the goal of getting better as a team and we did do things to get to that place. As a team we need to block better and make better decisions, and tonight we did a good job in those aspects. Our offense is evolving and I like the direction we’re going.”

The Lobos return to tournament action next weekend at the Borderland Invitational, Sept. 16-17 in Las Cruces and in El Paso. NMSU, UTEP, and Texas-Pan American round out the field.
