Volleyball: Lobos Defeat SMU, 3-2 in Record Setting Match
Complete Release in PDF Format Albuquerque, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team defeated the SMU Mustangs tonight 3-2, in their first match of the Comcast Lobo Invitational. The Lobos defeated the Mustangs, 25-30, 19-30, 30-28, 30-21, and 15-12 to secure their second victory of the season. UNM is 2-8 on the year while SMU drops to 4-7. In an earlier match the Temple Owls defeated the Auburn Tigers in three, 30-16, 30-16, and 30-20. Down two games to none UNM bounced back and set a new single match team record with 33 block assists (1983 - 32 vs. Colorado State on Nov. 11). Freshman Chelsea Sondrup also set a new UNM single match record with 13 block assists (11 - Cathy Peterson vs. Utah St. on 10-31-87 and Jodi Hinchy vs. Utah on 11-10-88). Senior Staci Masten’s 10 block assists lists her in fourth place in UNM single match block assist records. The Lobos fought back behind the hitting of junior Anna Reines who scored a team-high 17 kills. Reines hit .317 for the match and totaled a career high five block assists. Coming back from a torn ligament and playing in a limited capacity junior Lynzie Hayes helped the Lobos coming off the bench to serve. Hayes totaled four digs in her return to the lineup. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack has come into her own directing the Lobo attack. Meihack scored her sixth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 11 digs. Senior Blaire Burns totaled 14 digs defensively for the Lobos, the sixth match Burns has scored double figure digs. The Comcast Lobo Invitational completes tournament play tomorrow with a four-match slate of action. The morning session includes a 10 a.m. match between Auburn and SMU followed by a noon face off between Temple and New Mexico. The evening session starts at five with SMU taking on the Temple Owls followed by the tournament finale between Auburn and New Mexico. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
