Volleyball: Lobos Capture Comcast Lobo Invite Title with Win over Auburn
Complete Release in PDF Format Albuquerque, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball took the tournament title tonight at the Comcast Lobo Invitational by virture of their 3-0 win over the Aubrun Tigers. New Mexico entered the tournament 1-8, but swept all three of their opponents to claim the championship. The Lobos defeated the Tigers, 30-15, 30-19, and 30-27. UNM junior Anna Reines was named the tournament Most Valuable Player and freshman Chelsea Sondrup and senior Blaire Burns were named to the all-tournament team. UNM dominated the match hitting a season high .314 on 46 kills 14 errors in 102 attemts to Auburn’s .128 (35k-21e-109ta). New Mexico outblocked AU, 9.5 to 5.0 behind the blocking of Sondrup and sophomore Cayse Kaveny who both had four block assists. Defensivley UNM had 40 digs and nine service aces to Auburn’s 37 digs and four aces. Sondrup led Lobo hitters with a .529 hitting percentage on 11 kills, 2 errors in 17 attempts. Senior Vanessa Shields was the only other Lobo to hit double figure kills with 13. Shield’s hit .346 on the night (13k-4e-26ta) and along with junior Andrea Sanchez, scored three service aces a piece. Tournament final standings: 1. New Mexico 3-0 2. Temple 2-1 3. SMU 1-2 4.
