Update - The University of New Mexico volleyball team (6-12, 1-4 MWC) will travel to Las Vegas to face the UNLV Rebels on Fri., Oct. 18, then head to San Diego to take on the Aztecs of San Diego State on Sat., Oct. 19.

Looking at the Competition - The Rebels are 4-14 overall and are 0-5 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV last took on the Aztecs on Oct. 11 losing in three games 22-30, 23-30, and 21-30 in San Diego.

SDSU is 13-8 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Aztecs are sitting in second place in conference standings tied with Utah.

Series vs. UNLV/SDSU - UNLV has a 5-4 series lead over the Lobos heading into their 10th meeting. The last time the two schools met was during the 2001 season in Las Vegas. The Rebels took the match, 20-30, 30-26, 20-30 and 20-30. SDSU leads UNM 18-9 in their series matchup. The Aztecs defeated UNM in San Diego by the scores of 21-30, 30-26, 19-30 and 28-30 last season.

Recap • vs. Wyoming - The Lobos suffered their first home loss of the season at the hands of the Wyoming Cowgirls, 3-1, in The Pit. The Lobos lost 28-30, 29-31, 30-27 and 27-10 to fall to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Senior Staci Masten had a career night posting a career highs with 18 kills, 39 attempts, 18 digs and two block solos. Masten was one block shy of scoring a triple double, instead notching her second double-double of the season with her 18 kills and 18 digs. Masten added seven block assists. Sophomore Cayse Kaveny alos had a great night hit. 429 behind 10 kills, one error in 21 attempts. Kaveny also had one block solo and four block assists. Senior Vanessa Shields added 14 kills and 12 digs to score her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup added eight block assists to UNM’s total of 24. As a team the Lobos outblocked the Cowgirls 15.0 to 7.0. Wyoming outdug New Mexico 73 to 64, while hitting .202 on 72 kills, 34 errors in 188 attempts to UNM’s .178 (64k-31e-185ta). Senior Blaire Burns changed midway through the match to an outside hitter position from her regular libero designation when junior Lynzie Hayes sat out the second game with a sore knee. Burns managed to score double figure kills for the 11th time this season with her 14 digs. Burns added five kills. vs. CSU -- UNM succumbed to the Colorado State Rams, 3-1, in front of a season record 1,422 fans in The Pit. The Lobos lost 30-26, 21-30, 26-30, and 22-30 to fall to 6-12 overall and 1-4 in the MWC. Leading the Lobos was senior Vanessa Shields who scored 11 kills and had nine digs on the evening. Shields added three service aces. Senior Staci Masten added nine kills and hit .273 against the Rams (9k-3e-22ta). Junior Anna Reines, who played in only two of the four games, hit .375 on eight kills, two errors in 16 attempts. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack totaled 35 assists, nine digs and three service aces. CSU out hit the Lobos .283 on 72 kills , 29 errors on 152 attempts to UNM’s .148 (45k-24e-142ta). New Mexico totaled 42 digs, nine service aces and 14 block assists.

Head Coach Kelley Sliva - Sliva comes to UNM after spending the past nine years at Northern Arizona University. Her career record stands at 149-116 (.562). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season.

Mountain West Conference - Two Lobos are listed in MWC stats (all matches) in kills - junior Anna Reines is ninth in kills averaging 3.46 per game. Senior Vanessa Shields is 11th averaging 3.07 kills per game. Sophomore Monica Meihack is listed sixth in assists averaging 10.30 per game and 11th in digs averaging 2.51. Senior Blaire Burns ranks seventh in digs with a 3.01 per game average. Senior Staci Masten is 11th in blocks averaging 1.06 per game as is freshman Chelsea Sondrup moved into the blocks also with a 1.06 per game average. In conference only matches, New Mexico is second is service aces with a 1.78 per game average. Shields is first the conference in service aces with a 0.62 per game average while Meihack is third with a 0.56 average. Burns is listed fifth in digs with a 3.17 per game average.2
