October 20 - Melissa Middleton, sophomore outside hitter, Glendale, Ariz.
Another week comes upon us as mid-terms dawn in on our fall semester. My second year as a UNM student-athlete and I have yet to get used to the scholarly part of the deal. I can honestly say that I love to attend class, that I love to learn and I love to expand the knowledge I already hold within me, although, I don't wake up feeling completely like that every day. There are days where I feel as though my nine hours of sleep was in actuality 30 minutes, or that I will make it through... if I can sleep and walk at the same time.
But this is what it is to be a student athlete, to get up and have the ability and responsibility to get what you need to succeed done before practice. With this I come back to mid-terms...
Mid-terms ... the tests, exams and papers which, in addition to finals, provide the most stress to anyone who is currently enrolled in school. The best part about having mid-terms is knowing how you will feel once they are over with, AMAZING!
A tough issue dealing with mid-terms while being a student athlete is the possibility that you may be traveling on the day you have a test. I know I have run into those issues once or twice and because of them, have found how beneficial keeping in contact with your professors is. Trust me, it's a must as a student-athlete, and this year as a volleyball player, keeping contact was more than imperative for success considering the fact that we had traveled basically all of September.
Moving on from mid-terms, this week was also Fall Break. Although we technically didn't have the entire Fall Break to rest, Jeff was nice enough to let us off on Monday and Tuesday.
We arrived back at practice on Wednesday ready to work and prepare to play the Air Force Falcons. Thursday and Friday were challenging days. As a team we are learning to weigh all of our matches the same and to treat each one as though it is the championship.
As we prepared for the match on Saturday, we had pass and serve along with a great meal from Fresh Choice down on Central and 4th. While awaiting our warm up time, Jeff came into the locker room for our pre-game meeting and we chose 3 goals we had for our match up against Air Force.
As a team it has been a priority to make a team goal as well as an individual goal for each match and for the season all together. By having these goals we remained calm and played the game we needed to play to overcome our opponent. Indeed we did succeed in all areas and put a W on the board.
