Volleyball: Lobos to Take on Falcons in Colorado Springs
Complete Release in PDF Format • This Week • Friday - Oct. 25 at Air Force (8-13, 2-5 MWC) Update - The University of New Mexico volleyball team (6-14, 1-6 MWC) will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the Falcons of Air Force on Fri., Oct. 25. The match begins at 7 p.m. Looking at the Competition - The Falcons are 8-13 overall and are 2-5 in the Mountain West Conference. Air Force was on the same road trip as the Lobos in reverse fashion playing at San Diego State on Fri., Oct. 18 and losing to the Aztecs in three games, 30-16, 30-15, and 30-16. The Falcons then lost to the Rebels of UNLV in four games, 26-30, 22-30, 30-27 and 26-30 in Las Vegas. Series vs. Air Force - The Lobos carry a 9-1 series record against the Air Force Falcons heading into their 11th meeting. New Mexico defeated AFA earlier this season in Albuquerque, 3-0, by the scores 30-23, 31-29, and 30-25. Records Update - Freshman Chelsea Sondrup totaled 13 block assists in the two matches this weekend, good for a 1.9 per game average. Sondrup’s season total 77, is nine shy of fifth place in UNM Record books for single season records and is 34 block assists away from breaking the record held by Robyn Wentworth (110 • 1994). Senior Staci Masten is right behind her at a season total 71 block assists. Senior Vanessa Shields is 13 service aces shy of fifth place in UNM single season records. Shields season ace total stands at 25. Recap • vs. UNLV - The Lobos lost to the UNLV Rebels in three games, 30-15, 30-28, 30-25 to fall to 6-13 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain West Conference. Leading the Lobo attack was junior outside hitter Anna Reines who was the lone Lobo in double figure kills with 16. Senior Blaire Burns had 11 digs on the night - making it the 12th match of the season in double figure digs. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup scored a match-high six block assists. Reines added one block solo and four block assists against the Rebels. UNM as a team outblocked UNLV 9.0 to 8.0. New Mexico hit .159 on 40 kills, 22 errors in 113 attempts to the Rebels .284 (52k-19e-116ta). UNLV outdug the Lobos 44 to 34 and served six aces to UNM’s three. Senior Vanessa Shields score two of the Lobos three service aces. vs. SDSU -- UNM lost to the San Diego State Aztecs in four games, 32-30, 26-30, 30-24, and 30-22 to fall to 6-14 overall and 1-6 in the MWC. Junior outside hitter Anna Reines scored a team-high 21 kills and hit .320 for the match on 21 kills, five errors in a career-high 50 attempts. Senior Vanessa Shields scored her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs. Senior Staci Masten scored her third double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs. Masten added one block solo and four block assists. UNM hit .216 for the match scoring 61 kills and defensively adding a team season high 71 digs. Four Lobos scored double figure digs including senior Blaire Burns who scored a career-high 20. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack scored her seventh double-double of the season with 49 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup defensively totalled seven block assists. As a team the Lobos scored 22 block assists and tied SDSU in blocks 12.0 to 12.0. Her career record stands at 149-118 (.558). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season. Mountain West Conference - Two Lobos are listed in MWC stats (all matches) in kills - junior Anna Reines is sixth in kills averaging 3.65 per game. Senior Vanessa Shields is 14th averaging 3.01 kills per game. Sophomore Monica Meihack is listed sixth in assists averaging 10.45 per game and 12th in digs averaging 2.53. Senior Blaire Burns ranks tied for third in digs with a 3.15 per game average. Senior Staci Masten is 13th in blocks averaging 1.05 per game. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup is averaging 1.14 blocks per game which ranks her 10th in all matches, fifth in conference only matches at a 1.36 per game average. In conference only matches, New Mexico is third in service aces with a 1.68 per game average. Shields is second the conference in service aces with a 0.60 per game average while Meihack is third with a 0.52 average. Burns is listed third in digs with a 3.52 per game average.
