Volleyball: Lobos Travel to CSU; Wyoming in Final Conference Road Series
Complete Release in PDF Format • This Week • Friday - Nov. 8 - Ft. Collins, Colo. Colorado State (16-8, 8-2 MWC) 7 p.m. Saturday - Nov. 9 - Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming (18-8, 3-7 MWC) 7 p.m. Update - The University of New Mexico volleyball team (7-16, 2-8 MWC) will travel to Ft. Collins to take on the Rams of CSU on Fri., Nov. 8 and then to Laramie, Wyo. on Sat., Nov. 9 to face the Cowgirls of Wyoming in their final conference road series of the season. Looking at the Competition - The Rams split their weekend series on the road defeating the Rebels of UNLV in four games, 29-31, 37-35, 30-26, 30-12 and then losing to the Aztecs of San Diego State in three, 20-30, 30-25, and 27-30. CSU is second in the Mountain West with an 8-2 conference record, 16-8 mark overall. Wyoming is 18-8 overall and are 3-7 in the MWC. The Cowgirls were also on the road losing at SDSU in four games, 30-27, 15-30, 30-27, and 30-22. UW then lost at UNLV in three games, 30-16, 30-28, and 30-22. The Cowgirls stand in sixth place in conference standings. Series vs. CSU/Wyoming - The Lobos lost both their matches at home earlier this season to Wyoming and Colorado State. The Rams defeated the Lobos in four games, 30-26, 21-30, 26-30, and 22-30. The series record between the two schools stands at 20-24 in the Rams favor. Wyoming defeated New Mexico in four games, 28-30, 29-31, 30-27, and 27-30. The Cowgirls own a 24-23 record against the Lobos heading into their 48th meeting. Records Update - Freshman Chelsea Sondrup moved into fifth place in UNM single season block assist records with her two block solos and five block assists scored against Utah. Sondrup’s season total 87 block assists, is five shy of fifth place in UNM Record books for single season records and is 23 away from breaking the record held by Robyn Wentworth (110 • 1994) set during her senior season. Senior Staci Masten is close behind her with a season total 77 block assists. Senior Vanessa Shields is 12 service aces shy of fifth place in UNM single season records. Shields season ace total stands at 26. Sliva hits 150 - New Mexico head coach Kelley Sliva hit 150 career victories with the 3-0 decision over the Air Force Academy. Sliva is in her 10th year as a head coach at the Division I level, having coached at Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Recap • vs. BYU -The Lobos lost to the BYU Cougars by the scores of 30-25, 30-19 and 30-22 to fall to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the Mountain West Conference. BYU improves to 10-14 overall and 5-5 in conference play. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup hit .389 for the match on 7 kills, no errors in 18 attempts. Senior Staci Masten led the Lobos with eight kills. Sophomore Cayse Kaveny hit .200 on six kills, four errors in 10 attempts. Kaveny added one block solo and one block assist. As a team the Lobos hit .061 on 35 kills, 29 errors in 99 attempts to the Cougars .350 (52k-17e-100ta). BYU out dug the Lobos 27 to 23 and out-blocked UNM 12.0 to 3.0. vs. Utah - In a tough battle, the University of New Mexico volleyball lost to the No. 22 ranked Utes of Utah in four games, 301-9, 32-30, 30-23, and 30-25. The Lobos fall to 7-16 overall and are 2-8 in conference play. Utah improves to 18-6 and are 8-3 in the Mountain West. Junior outside hitter Anna Reines led the Lobos scoring a team-high 17 kills and hitting .387 (17k-5e-31ta) for the match. Senior Vanessa Shields was the other Lobo in double figure kills with 13. Shields added one block solo and two block assists. Senior Blaire Burns returned to her position as libero scoring a match-high 12 digs. This was the 15th match of the season Burns scored double figure digs. Burns leads the team in digs with 260, good for a 3.10 per game average. Sophomore Cayse Kaveny had a great match hitting .333 (9k-3e-18ta) and scoring a team-high six block assists. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup scored two block solos and five block assists, moving into fifth place in UNM single season records with 87 block assists. The record stands at 110 set in 1994 by then senior Robyn Wentworth. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack scored a career-high five block assists. As a team UNM out blocked the Utes, 15.0 to 9.5, out dug Utah 42-41 but were out served with UU scoring 14 service aces to the Lobos two. UNM hit .144 on 58 kills, 36 errors, in 153 attempts to Utah’s .200 (57k-30e-135ta). Her career record stands at 150-120 (.556). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season.
Mountain West Conference - Two Lobos are listed in MWC stats (all matches) in kills - junior Anna Reines is sixth in kills averaging 3.58 per game. Senior Vanessa Shields is 14th averaging 3.01 kills per game. Sophomore Monica Meihack is listed sixth in all matches and seventh in conference in assists averaging 10.54 and 10.94 assists per game. Meihack is listed 13th in digs averaging 2.36 (all matches).
Senior Blaire Burns ranks third in digs with a 3.29 per game average in conference only matches and fourth in all matches with a 3.10 average. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup is averaging 1.16 blocks per game which ranks her ninth in all matches, seventh in conference only matches at a 1.34 per game average.
In conference only matches, New Mexico is third in digs with a 12.60 per game average. Shields ranks third the conference in service aces with a 0.41 per game average while Meihack is fourth with a 0.43 average.
