Volleyball: Lobos Set to Host Aztecs & Rebels
Complete Release in PDF Format • This Week • Friday - Nov. 15 - San Diego State (18-11, 9-3 MWC) - 7 p.m. Saturday - Nov. 6 • Senior Night - UNLV (9-17, 5-7 MWC) - 7 p.m. Johnson Arena - UNM Main Campus Update - In their final home conference series the University of New Mexico volleyball team (7-18, 2-10 MWC) will host the Aztecs of San Diego State on Fri., Nov. 15 and the Rebels of UNLV on Sat., Nov. 16. Both matches are slated for a 7 p.m. start at Johnson Arena on the UNM Main Campus. Ticket Information - Tickets for Lobo Volleyball can be purchased through the UNM Athletics Ticket Office at 505.925.LOBO (5626) or through Tickets.com, at 1.800.905.3315. All seats are General Admission. Single game prices are $4 for Adults, $3 for Seniors (55+), and $2 for Youth (18 and under). UNM Faculty and Staff as well as, UNM Students are free with valid ID. The Lobos will honor seniors Kelly Griffin, Vanessa Shields, Blaire Burns and Staci Masten on Saturday night vs. UNLV. Looking at the Competition - The Aztecs and the Rebels had only one match this weekend - against each other. SDSU traveled to Las Vegas and lost in three games, 30-23, 30-28, and 30-20. The two schools split their regular season series - each winning at home in three games. Series vs. SDSU/UNLV - The Lobos lost both their matches on the road earlier this season at San Diego State (1-3) and at UNLV (0-3). Heading into their 29th meeting, SDSU holds a 19-9 series record against UNM. The Rebels hold a 6-4 mark against the Lobos heading into their 11th meeting. Records Update - Freshman Chelsea Sondrup totaled three block assists in the weekend series at CSU (1) and Wyoming (2). Sondrup’s season total 90 block assists, is five shy of fourth place in UNM Record books for single season records, held by senior Vanessa Shields (95) and is 21 away from breaking the record held by Robyn Wentworth (110 • 1994) set during her senior season. Sliva hits 150 - New Mexico head coach Kelley Sliva hit 150 career victories with the 3-0 decision over the Air Force Academy on Oct. 25. Sliva is in her 10th year as a head coach at the Division I level, having coached at Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Recap • vs. CSU - The Lobos suffered another loss at the hands of the Colorado State Rams in Ft. Collins. The Rams took the match in three games, 30-26, 30-20 and 30-26 in front of a crowd of 1,310. Junior outside hitter Anna Reines once again led the Lobo attack hitting .409 on 11 kills, two errors in 22 attemtps. Reines was the lone Lobo to score double figure kills against the Rams. Senior libero Blaire Burns totaled a team high 13 digs, the 16th match of the season in double figure digs for Burns. Sophomore middle blocker Cayse Kaveny totaled nine kills and hit .316 against the Rams. Junior Andrea Sanchez scored UNM’s lone service ace. As a team New Mexico hit .171 on 40 kills, 20 errors in 117 attempts to CSU’s .324 (52k-17e-108ta). The Lobos outblocked the Rams 4.5 to 3.0. Senior Staci Masten scored three block assists while Kaveny and freshman Chelsea Sondrup scored two a piece. vs. Wyoming - In their final road conference game the University of New Mexico volleyball team lost to the Wyoming Cowgirls in four games, 30-24, 28-30, 30-24, and 30-26. Leading the Lobos was junior outside hitter Anna Reines who had a team high 19 kills. Reines also scored a career-high two block solos and added one block assist. Sophomore Cayse Kaveny also had a great night hitting scoring .400 on 11 kills, three errors in 20 attempts. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack had 53 assists, one shy of her career high. Junior defensive specialist Andrea Sanchez was the lone Lobo in double figure digs with 10. Senior Blaire Burns had a career-high 13 kills against Wyoming and hit .222 for the match (13k-5e-36ta). Burns added nine digs and one block solo. As a team UNM hit .261 on 60 kills, 23 errors in 142 attempts to Wyoming’s .298 (72k-27e-151ta). The Lobos out blocked UW 9.0 to 7.0 , but were out served with the Cowgirls serving up 16 aces to UNM’s 4. Her career record stands at 150-122 (.551). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season.
