Volleyball: Lobos Lose Tough Five-Game Match to SDSU
Complete Release in PDF Format Albuquerque, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost to the San Diego State Aztecs tonight in a tough five game match, 30-26, 24-30, 30-27, 21-30, and 14-16. The Lobos are now 7-19 overall and 2-11 in the Mountain West Conference. SDSU improved to 19-11 and 10-3 in conference play. Senior Staci Masten led the Lobos in kills with a career-high 20. Masten hit .409 against the Aztecs, her second best performance of the season. Senior Vanessa Shields added 14 kills, while junior Anna Reines scored 19. As a team the Lobos totaled 69 kills and hit .222 (69k-26e-194ta) to SDSU’s .239 (88k-39e-205ta). Shields scored two block assists and needs just one more to move into fifth place in UNM career block assists records. Senior libero Blaire Burns scored a career-high 25 digs against SDSU. Burns leads the team in digs and totals 307 for the season. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack also scored a career-high in assists with 56. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup moved into a tie for third place in UNM single season records in block assists with her team-high eight scored tonight against the Aztecs. Sondrup totals 104 season blocks (6 solo and 98 block assists) and needs just 13 block assists to break the record (110 - Robyn Wentworth - 1994). The Lobos outblocked SDSU 13.5 to 10.0 on one block solo, scored by sophomore Cayse Kaveny, and 25 block assists. The Aztecs out dug the Lobos 76 to 64, but UNM outserved SDSU scoring six aces to their two. New Mexico hosts the UNLV Rebels tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at Johnson Arena. It will the four Lobo seniors final regular season match at home. Blaire Burns, Kelly Griffin, Staci Masten and Vanessa Shields will be honored during team introductions.
