Volleyball: Lobos Defeat UNLV , 3-2
Complete Release in PDF Format Albuquerque, N.M. -- In their second straight five-game match the University of New Mexico Lobo volleyball team defeated the UNLV Rebels, 28-30, 24-30, 30-21, 30-25, and 20-18 to win their final regular season conference match. The Lobos are now 8-19 overall and finished 3-11 in the Mountain West Conference. UNLV drops to 10-18 overall and 6-8 in conference play. Leading the Lobo attack was junior outside hitter Anna Reines who scored a career-high 27 kills and hit .339 for the match (27k-7e-59ta). Reines’ 59 attacks is also a career high. Senior Vanessa Shields scored her 10th double-double of the season with her 18 kills (a season best) and 14 digs. Shields moved into fifth place in UNM individual career records in block assists. She totals 201 scoring two against the Rebels. Senior libero Blaire Burns scored her second straight match with a career-high 25 digs. Burns totals a team-high 332 digs for the season and is averaging 3.29 per game. Sophomore Monica Meihack scored her eighth double-double of the season with a career-high 61 assists and 11 digs. Meihack added two aces. As a team the Lobos hit .218 on 72 kills, 30 errors in 193 attempts to UNLV’s .147 (76k-46e-204ta). New Mexico outblocked the Rebels 16.5 to 10.0, totalling 31 block assists, which ranks third in UNM single match team records. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup jumped into second place in UNM single season records in block assists and should break the record after scoring a team-high 11 against UNLV. Sondrup, who totals 109 season block assists, needs two more to set the record held by former Lobo Robyn Wentworth (110- 1994).
The Lobos now prepare for the Mountain West Conference Championships to be held Nov. 21-23 in Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State will host the championships.A
