Volleyball: Lobos Take on Aztecs in First Round of MWC Championship
Complete Release in PDF Format • This Week • at Mountain West Championship Thursday - Nov. 21 vs. San Diego State (20-11, 11-3 MWC) 1:30 p.m. Live on Comcast Cable Channel 72 Update - The No. 7 seed University of New Mexico Lobos will take on the No. 2 seed San Diego State University in the first round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship on Thurs., Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m. The UNM-SDSU match will be televised live by Comcast Cable Channel 72. This will be the first televised match for the Lobos this season. Looking at SDSU - The Aztecs came to the Duke City this past weekend and battled the Lobos tooth and nail coming out on top in a five-game match, 26-30, 30-24, 27-30, 30-21 and 16-14. The match lasted over two hours. SDSU then traveled to Colorado Springs and swept the Air Force Falcons in three-straight games, 30-22, 30-20 and 30-18. San Diego State is 20-11 overall and finished 11-3 in conference play. Series vs. SDSU - The Lobos battled the Aztecs this past week succumbing in the final game of the five-game match, 16-14. SDSU swept the season series against New Mexico winning at home and on the road. Heading into their 30th meeting, SDSU holds a 20-9 series record against UNM. Possible matchups: New Mexico, if it gets past SDSU, has a date with either Utah (No. 2 seed; 21-7 overall, 10-4 MWC) or Wyoming (No. 6 seed; 20-10 overall, 5-9 MWC). Utah is 30-26 against New Mexico and Wyoming holds a 25-23 mark against the Lobos. Records Update - Freshman Chelsea Sondrup totaled 19 block assists in the weekend series against SDSU (8) and UNLV (11) moving her into second place in UNM single season record books with a season total of 109. Sondrup is two away from breaking the record held by Robyn Wentworth (110 • 1994) set during her senior season. Sondrup also moved into fifth place in UNM single season block records totalling 115 to date. Again Wentworth holds the record at 139 (1994). Senior Vanessa Shields moved into fifth place in UNM Career Records in block assists with a current mark of 201. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack quietly slipped into fourth place in UNM single season records in assists scoring 117 for the two matches, 56 against SDSU and a career-high 61 against UNLV. Meihack totals 1,084 and is averaging 10.73 per game. Sliva hits 150 - New Mexico head coach Kelley Sliva hit 150 career victories with the 3-0 decision over the Air Force Academy on Oct. 25. Sliva is in her 10th year as a head coach at the Division I level, having coached at Northern Arizona and New Mexico. Recap • vs. SDSU - The Lobos lost to the San Diego State Aztecs in a tough five game match, 30-26, 24-30, 30-27, 21-30, and 14-16. Senior Staci Masten led the Lobos in kills with a career-high 20. Masten hit .409 against the Aztecs, her second best performance of the season. Senior Vanessa Shields added 14 kills, while junior Anna Reines scored 19. As a team the Lobos totaled 69 kills and hit .222 (69k-26e-194ta) to SDSU’s .239 (88k-39e-205ta). Senior libero Blaire Burns scored a career-high 25 digs against SDSU. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack also scored a then career-high in assists with 56. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup scored a team-high eight block assists against the Aztecs. The Lobos outblocked SDSU 13.5 to 10.0 on one block solo, scored by sophomore Cayse Kaveny, and 25 block assists. The Aztecs out dug the Lobos 76 to 64, but UNM outserved SDSU scoring six aces to their two. vs. UNLV - In their second straight five-game match the University of New Mexico Lobo volleyball team defeated the UNLV Rebels, 28-30, 24-30, 30-21, 30-25, and 20-18 to win their final regular season conference match at home. Leading the Lobo attack was junior outside hitter Anna Reines who scored a career-high 27 kills and hit .339 for the match (27k-7e-59ta). Reines’ 59 attacks is also a career high. Senior Vanessa Shields scored her 10th double-double of the season with her 18 kills (a season best) and 14 digs. Shields moved into fifth place in UNM individual career records in block assists. She totals 201 scoring two against the Rebels. Senior libero Blaire Burns scored her second straight career-high 25 digs against UNLV. Burns totals a team-high 332 digs for the season and is averaging 3.29 per game. Sophomore Monica Meihack scored her eighth double-double of the season with a career-high 61 assists and 11 digs. Meihack added two aces. As a team the Lobos hit .218 on a season high 72 kills, 30 errors in 193 attempts to UNLV’s .147 (76k-46e-204ta). New Mexico outblocked the Rebels 16.5 to 10.0, totalling 31 block assists, which ranks third in UNM single match team records. Freshman Chelsea Sondrup jumped into second place in UNM single season records in block assists and should break the record after scoring a team-high 11 against UNLV. Her career record stands at 151-123 (.551). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season.
