Update - The University of New Mexico Lobos (8-20, 3-11 MWC) host the Albuturkey Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Johnson Arena. Teams scheduled to participate include the Butler Bulldogs, Rice Owls and UCLA Bruins.

Looking at the Participants - Butler competed in the 2002 Horizon League Tournament this past weekend losing to Wright State in three games, 30-22, 30-27 and 30-28. The Bulldogs are 14-18 overall. The Rice Owls participated in the 2002 WAC Volleyball Championship where they lost to the San Jose State Spartans in the first round by the scores of 32-30, 26-30, 28-30, 30-23, and 9-15. The Owls are 18-13 overall and were 8-5 in the WAC. The Bruins of UCLA, ranked No. 21 in the latest USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll, defeated Arizona State in five games, 26-30, 30-22, 30-22, 23-30 and 15-13. UCLA then lost to No. 16 Arizona in four, 34-32, 21-30, 21-30, 28-30 to fall to 16-13 overall. The Bruins finished 9-9 in conference play.

Series vs. Albuturkey Field - The Lobos and Bulldogs of Butler will meet for the first time on Friday to open the tournament for UNM. New Mexico has a 5-2 series record against Rice, former conference opponents when the Lobos were a part of the WAC Conference. The last time the two schools met was during the WAC Championship in 1998 with the Owls topping the Lobos, 3-1, 6-15, 18-16, 8-15 and 13-15. UCLA has a perfect 5-0 mark against New Mexico. The last time the two schools met was during the 1993 NCAA tournament in Los Angeles. The Bruins swept the Lobos, 15-8, 15-3, and 15-6.

Records Update - Freshman Chelsea Sondrup totaled 3 block assists against the Aztecs in the first round of the 2002 MWC Volleyball Championship, thereby establishing a new UNM single season record in block assists with a current total of 112. Sondrup broke the record held by Robyn Wentworth (110 • 1994) set during her senior season. Sondrup also moved into fifth place in UNM single season block records totalling 118 to date. Again Wentworth holds the record at 139 (1994).

Senior Vanessa Shields is now tied for fourth place with former Lobo Alicia Bergmann (1992-95) in UNM Career Records in block assists with a current mark of 205.

Sophomore setter Monica Meihack, who totals 1,123 assists this season, is tied for third place in single season assists records with former Lobo All-American Karen Saavedra-Warnock (1987). Saavedra-Warnock holds the top spot with 1,352 set during the 1988 season.

Sliva hits 150 - New Mexico head coach Kelley Sliva hit 150 career victories with the 3-0 decision over the Air Force Academy on Oct. 25. Sliva is in her 10th year as a head coach at the Division I level, having coached at Northern Arizona and New Mexico.

Recap • vs. SDSU at 2002 MWC Championship - The No. 2 seeded San Diego State Aztecs defeated the seventh-seeded New Mexico Lobos in the first round of the 2002 Mountain West Conference volleyball championships in three games 30-23, 30-23, and 30-27 in Fort Collins.

Junior outside hitter Anna Reines, who was named MWC All-Conference, finished the match with 19 kills, three digs and two blocks and was named Cooper Tires Player of the Game for New Mexico. Reines was the lone Lobo in double figure kills.

Senior Blaire Burns, who switched positions from libero to outside hitter finished with 11 digs and scored seven kills. Burns finished hitting .300 (7k-1e-20ta). Senior Vanessa Shields scored a team high four block assists and added the lone block solo for UNM.

Freshman Chelsea Sondrup established herself in UNM record books with her three block assists. Sondrup totals 112 with three matches left in the season.

As a team UNM hit .241 on 51 kills, 18 errors in 137 attempts to SDSU’s .302 (62k-20e-139ta).

Head Coach Kelley Sliva - Sliva comes to UNM after spending the past nine years at Northern Arizona University. Her career record stands at 151-124 (.549). While at NAU, Sliva took the Lumberjacks to their first NCAA Volleyball Championship appearance (1999) and earned two Big Sky titles (1999 tournament and 2000 regular season). Sliva was named the 1999 Big Sky Coach of the Year. Sliva’s NAU teams scored five straight winning seasons, going 90-45 since the 1997 season.
