Kansas City, Mo. — For the 13th season out of the last 14, the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team has earned the prestigious NSCAA College Team Academic Award for maintaining a team grade point average of 3.35 during the 2015-16 season. The honor demonstrates once again that the Lobos continue to excel not only on the pitch, but in the classroom as well.

A total of 893 soccer teams across the country earned the honor in 2015-16 including 314 men’s teams and 579 women’s teams. The Lobo women’s soccer team also made the list. UNM was one of just 223 schools in the country to have both its men’s and women’s squads make the cut.

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player’s GPA, then dividing by the number of players.

UNM continues to make academic success a priority. In head coach Jeremy Fishbein’s tenure (2002-present), New Mexico has had 19 Academic All-Americans – more than any other men’s soccer program in the country in all divisions. In addition, the Lobos have garnered 92 Academic All-Conference honorees and 12 NSCAA Scholar All-Americans under Fishbein’s tutelage.

The Lobos are scheduled to return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 as they travel to #17 Charlotte to resume C-USA competition.
